New Prince of Tennis is My Guilty Pleasure

There was a time I thought Prince of Tennis was stupid and unfitting of my refined tastes. I wasn’t too happy a friend of mine (one of the few who actually watched anime) made me sit through the musical, the live action and the OVAs either. It’s was fine to enjoy ironically for all it’s glorious cheesiness, but there was no way I was going to actually follow PoT.

Looking back on it, I simply didn’t understand what it meant to enjoy something for the sake of enjoying it. Prince of Tennis is the perfect kind of guilty pleasure for me. It’s unintentionally hilarious and the only way I could possibly sit through one episode is to take screencaps and the most ridiculous lines and laugh at how much pandering there is. This is definitely a show targeted towards female fans, and I’m part of that demographic. The fact that it had idol-like male actors star in musicals reinforces that fact. I’m not really ashamed of that (not that I have any reason to be) especially when you have golden lines like this:

I admit that there’ll probably come a time where this show will lose its novelty and I’ll go back to thinking about how dumb it is but for now, I want to relish the moment. I want to enjoy this show for being oddly self aware of it’s own ridiculousness and using that to make lots of money.

So heterosexual it hurts.

  1. I FEEL THE SAME WAY. I never thought someone else would say that though, and when I told my blogging partner (R3gnard) the story of why I like PoT, she probably thought I was crazy. But for me, PoT was actually one of the first two manga I got into (quite some time ago), and ever since then it’s held a small niche in my heart that will never be go away. Now, I just watch it BECAUSE it’s PoT. XD Can’t explain how happy I was to read your post. :D

    • We’re kindred souls, it seems! It’s so cheesy in an endearing kind of way, and so inoffensive too! It’s good old fun for the sentimental fan, I think.

  2. Hihi ^^ I’m new at your blog, and a DIE HARD Prince of Tennis fan (having watched the anime, the ovas, the live action movie, the musicals, having read the manga etc…) and… Yeah. I couldn’t agree with you more. It’s pure female fanservice, it’s ridiculous and unrealistic and probably a damn mockery to real tennis all over the planet, but it’s so, so much FUN! XD Gotta love it.

Yep. It’s one of those things where you have to discard logic and just enjoy it for what it is. Even the QUALITY animation is worth it. Such a fun show!

  3. I think this show falls pretty much in the same category as lets say … initial d, or hikaru no go .. therefore it’s pretty awesome. Getting better, new challenges, always fun. I guess as a dude those high res face shots just appear as cheap still shots due to budget over female fanservice o_O

    • Wow, Hikaru no Go was really good. It’s been a while since I’ve heard it mentioned. Pretty underrated.

I’ve always been under the impression that PoT was more popular with girls than it is with men, mostly because I’ve never really come across a many guys who have watched it. But yeah, in a fangirl’s eyes, those pretty still shots are– really pretty. I wouldn’t call it fanservice, I think stuff like crossing rackets and gazing into each other’s eyes is fanservice but those still shots are pretty well drawn even if they’re effectively used for cost cutting. Hahaha!

  4. PoT was the first anime / manga that got me really involved in that world. I love it because of its friendships, rivalries, and comedy. I love it for its tennis too, but not as much. Of course PoT has a larger female fanbase, but the male fans are out there too! *searches* In the end, PoT is the thing I will always come back to, even if I like other things for a while, because it is my family.
